Tracking tweets in a specific language

The Union Metrics Twitter Trackers include language filtering. You can limit the tweets in any new Tracker to include only those that are in a specific language. We have two language filtering options.

Global language filtering

If you want to monitor tweets in a specific language across all queries in a Tracker, select the language you want from the drop-down menu on the Tracker setup page. Then add the search queries you want us to track and we'll filter the tweets in your Tracker to anything matching those terms in that language only.

In-line language filtering

We also support in-line language filters. You can add a specific language filter to any individual search query in your Tracker, or exclude certain queries in specific languages. If you want to limit certain queries to a particular language, add the lang:XY filter to any query in your Tracker, like this:

That would track only Spanish-language tweets that mentioned the word cafe (and would exclude other languages like French and English), as well as English-language tweets about coffee.

Supported languages

Currently, we support the following languages and codes. Each language has a two-letter code you can add to the lang: operator.

  • Arabic (ar)
  • Dutch (nl)
  • English (en)
  • Farsi (fa)
  • French (fr)
  • German (de)
  • Indonesian (id)
  • Italian (it)
  • Japanese (ja)
  • Portuguese (pt)
  • Spanish (es)

Please note, this filtering is based on Twitter's language classification, so we can't guarantee these results with 100% accuracy. In most instances languages will be labeled correctly, but sometimes it can be hard to determine the appropriate language, so tweets may be misclassified from time to time.
